The Mortal World

Starke and its surrounding area is located in Bradford County, Florida. The mortal world is largely unaware of the supernatural, even though supernatural interests manipulate them.

The mortal government

The mortal government largely does what it is suppose to, but at twice the price you would expect, and half as fast. Despite this the local city government in Starke is effective and the mortal world is largely prosperous. With the city actively working to reinvigorate their holdings following the great recession.

Tax dollars are being used around the city to rebuild properties that have fallen to disrepair, and the local police are cracking down on crime at a surprising rate.

The constabulary

The Bradford County Sheriff has recently received a considerable increase in its funding and that extra cashflow has allowed them to crack down on drug and gang violence in the area, as well as declaring war on the opioid and methamphetamine trade. They have also purchased a single armored personnel carrier for their swat response team.

The common folk

Mortals in Starke are happy, with their economy improving and the city looking better than it had in nearly twenty years, they largely ignore the seedy underbelly of the city, and are blissfully unaware of the monsters around them.

The clued in

There are several groups of mortals that have come to understand the supernatural. And take advantage of that. The fact that they still exist, being aware of the veil, is testament to their ferocity and ability.

The Irish Mob
Starke is home to a small group of families linked to the irish mob. Jimmy Flanagan runs the mob in the area with the help of his brothers William and Donal. They still run loan sharking operations though modern computers and the internet have cut into their business sharply, forcing them to run drugs for the Cali cartel, which puts them at odds with supernatural forces in the area and even with mortal gangs like the Brown boys and La Familia.

The Mafia The mafia has several old families in the area, but they have largely moved on from their smuggling and violence laded past and into more lucrative ventures, such as running the local unions and even some of the government. The courts are highly influenced by the mafia in this area, as are the local police departments.

The 9th Street crew Some would wonder how a street gang can stand up against the supernatural world, but the 9th street crew has done it against all odds. Some would even consider this group plucky, but the reality is that they have been lucky, and are utterly cold blooded. No one knows how long their luck will hold out, and if their murderous nature will protect them from the things that go bump in the night.
