BIO
-Raised in middle class home with distant parents who never seemed to care much about what he was doing— be it spending hours talking to imaginary friends in the woods as a child to changing majors from Fine Arts to Folklore and Literature and then dropping out of college little more than a year later.
-Awakened just after dropping out of college, previous to coming to Starke (which was mostly in pursuit of magickal knowledge, but also at the suggestion of members of his coven).
-Had spent months obsessed with magick before finding witchcraft and eventually the Verbenae.
-Gifted with Jenkins, his familiar, shortly before coming to Starke, along with a devil’s mark to seal their pact.

NOTES
Avatar (4): Person (ambiguous) made of blinding white energy and draped in a cloak of shifting elements. They’re just as ambitious as Jack is, but even more intent on gaining knowledge and power that they don’t already have.
Familiar (2): A brown rat named Jenkins bound to Jack as a guide. Feeds off of Jack’s blood via his devil’s mark.
Resources (2): Jack works at a plant nursery during the day and sells paintings to make enough for a small home with a backyard large enough to hold his flourishing garden and a peaceful meditation space. Instead of a car, he takes his bike most places.
Dream (1): When needed, Jack meditates to achieve a state of semi-consciousness in which he connects to Jenkins and his own thoughts to gather information about a task at hand. Other than peace and quiet, Jack typically requires the burning of particular herbs for his meditation (his favorite being Blue Sage).
Node (2): In planning the move to Starke, one of the homes that immediately caught his eye was a single bedroom house with a tiny studio and the remnants of a once wonderful garden in its backyard. While most of the plants were dead, Jack sensed a weak presence coming from a large tree in the center of the yard. Upon further investigation, he discovered a small node that hopefully, with his help and dedication, will be able to grow during his time here.

HISTORY
Jack reluctantly stepped off of the bus and took in a breath of air... it seemed almost foul, compared to the grove he had come to know as a sort of home. Jenkins poked his head out of his pocket and nudged Jack’s hand, reminding them that they had somewhere to be now that they had arrived in Starke.
Jack was raised by an ironically close-knit pair of distant parents. Even as an only child, he wasn’t given much attention beyond basic interaction, and the majority of his life spent at home was either ignored or forgotten by one or both of his parents. From painting, to imaginary friends and flights of fantasy, Jack was free to explore a world beyond what his parents considered their reality, but at the cost of their love for him. When he left for college, he was determined to establish himself as an artist... and then folklore caught his eye... and then so did the idea of ‘fuck college, I’m going to live my life.’ Stepping outside of the [admittedly not-so ivy covered] halls, Jack was struck by a sudden new understanding of his reality... and also by lightning. The feeling was intense, and even though Jack knew that he was dropping towards the ground, it felt like he was falling into the endless sky. He could see the air around him, blurry as it was, and the firm structure of the concrete as it met him. In just a few moments, everything had changed for him— not only his life, but his perception of the world. He was Awakened.
Although he spent the first few months floundering for any information on what was happening, he quickly took to the idea of magick, and grew obsessed with learning about it, not content to stick with just the gutter magick he had picked up. His obsession drew him to several practices— paganism, Wicca, Voudoun— but it was witchcraft that stuck with him. The simple arts seemed easy to grasp and the powerful, eclectic practicality of it spoke to him, just as the gutter magick that he had been using did. Before long, though, he had reached a wall. There was no more to learn on his own, and even though he suspected that there were others like him, he had never met any. That’s where the Verbenae came in.
While studying witchcraft, Jack had heard of witch-folk practicing the Old Ways of magick, and while that had always intrigued him, he had initially dismissed it as new-agers practicing mislabeled neopaganism. At the end of one line, however, he decided to revisit the witch-folk, and the community he found affected him in such a way that he hadn’t experienced possibly in his entire life. In just his first meeting alone, he found that the earth was alive, as was his magick, and even the gods that once shaped this world like Mages now do. He also found an innate talent for Life magick and herbology that he had neither recognized nor considered before finding the Verbena. After another year of studying under their paradigm and practices— something that they were hesitant to share with an ‘orphan,’ however dedicated he seemed—, Jack was faced with initiation, which he thankfully lived through.
Just before coming to Starke, Jack had asked for guidance in magick, and members of his coven relented, offering to him a ritual for summoning a helpmeet. Whether through his own fault or a capricious mischief in the members of his coven, it was a rat that greeted him. The being offered to be such a guide, but at the cost of the familiar draining Jack’s vitality as well as Quintessence to feed it. Jack agreed, and Jenkins was bound to him. With a bite from the rat, a witch’s mark was placed below his ribs on his left side.
