Aliases: Hanai, Dominion of Iron Showers Height: 5’10” Weight: 140 lbs Gender: Male Ethnicity: White Hair: Short, Brown, Unkempt Eyes: Blue Figure: Slender Skin: Pale Apparent Age: mid 30s Face Claim: Harry Treadaway

Obvious Details: Anyone meeting Thomas for the first time will be immediately aware that he is not a healthy person. Although he’s not gaunt or emaciated, Anael’s only knowledge of human self-care is colored by the unhealthy coping mechanisms and lack of self-care learned from Thomas’ previous life. As part of that, he doesn’t eat much, using nicotine as an appetite suppressant as much as a mental stimulant. There is hardly a moment of the day that he isn’t working on some kind of research project, whether it be reading from books or on his phone. He also doesn’t sleep much, and so often has bags under his eyes.

Less than Obvious Details: Thomas has keen eyes, and is often watching his surroundings with keen interest, even while he’s reading or talking to people. He also has an awareness and care for the way he smells, often like spent gunpowder, a smell that reminds him of the time before he came down to Earth; he carries a bar of gunpowder and tobacco scented soap to cover any other smells.

Apocalyptic Form: Skin opalescent, nebulas spread through Anael, sparking the birth of stars across his cheeks. Meteor showers scatter through his skin, painting streaks of light that spread to his fingertips. He flies on wings like the arms of galaxies, like a shower of sparks spreading away from his shoulder blades. Yet despite the brightness of his visage, in this form, Anael’s eyes are like black holes, drawing all light into the deep emptiness of their void.

Personality:
After such a long life, Thomas is primarily filled with a deep exhaustion, partly due to the fatalist paradoxes that seem to plague people like him, and partly due to the lack of care he has for his own health and wellbeing. And although he has a deep respect and longing to help the people around him, he’s very wary and often prickly, even towards those he cares about. However, when he is working on a project; whether that be aiding someone or his own personal research and learning, he has a single-minded devotion to seeking out the truth of it, often getting frustrated over the loss of so much history that mankind has suffered since the beginning.

Backstory:
In the ancient beginning, the angel Anael served God as the Dominion of Iron Showers, one of several Dominions of the Fourth House, tasked with overseeing the times and seasons of meteor showers. It was in this role by Tyriel’s Edict of Instance that Anael served as a Diviner under Osir, guiding the meteors on their paths. After the dawning of the great debate and under the inspiration of Raphael, a Spirit on the Wind, Anael created a gift for the humans, in the form of an iron rich meteor. Working with an Angel of Light along with the Virtue of Silent Spheres, Anael sent a meteorite that would show unto mankind the nature of writing, so he thought, though, at first, they only saw it as a mystery. It included a list of angelic names, those that would eventually choose to serve mankind in the Great War.

When the war began, Anael found himself lost. Their desire to protect mankind against the cataclysm had inadvertently caused the very cataclysm they sought to prevent. He found himself following his guilt and his conscience, like Ahrimal, repairing what he could rather than contributing to the developing conflict. He was called Stormcrow and Ashen Seer, like others of a same mind. The Age of Wonder, to him, was nothing more than hubris, an overcorrection on the part of the Fallen to try to right some of the wrongs they had caused. Anael found himself walking the path between the High Cities, warning and pleading with both Fallen and Angels of the folly of treating mankind like lesser beings. He was challenged, time and again, by those of the Host, but he would not be silenced, like others of his kind. At the same time, Anael went to mankind, teaching them the times and seasons of the stars, as he had once held Dominion.

It was only later, when Asmodeus began to orchestrate the gathering of the Fourth House once more, that Anael rejoined his fellows, knowing that things could never be the same, but hoping to move toward a positive future for all Fallen and Mankind, even as the entropy of all things began to wear away at Creation. For Anael, it was like the Vigil reborn, a restoration of what once was to how things should have always been. Anael joined with the Oracle Vituryan in the heists of the crystal vaults, seeing parts of the Eternal Record he would never otherwise have seen, a blessing, he had thought.

But then came the Age of Atrocities. And while Anael had chosen to join with Asmodeus and the Fourth House once more, the Silver Legion joined the siege of Sagun in an act that horrified and disgusted Anael. Yet Anael was faithful. Rebellion against his oaths did not come easily to him. Anael served the Silver Legion faithfully despite his revulsion, working from Taba’et to experiment among mankind, and Zebul to catalogue the deaths of the angels, including the silencing of his boon companion’s name among the threads. At least until the atrocities of the Silver Legion could no longer be ignored. Anael began to help the humans escape, helped Lucifer to bring them to Genhinnom.

It was a relief for Anael after Lucifer again brought the Fallen together during the Time of Babel. Anael eagerly followed the will of Lucifer and of Penemue, offering wisdom and knowledge to mankind. It was then that he rediscovered the gift he had created for the humans in a place called Manbaa Al’Nahrayn (Modern Baalbek Syria), the Source of Two Rivers. The humans had built one of their failed mimicries of Fallen bastions around it and had begun to study and use it as an altar, calling it Elah Gabal while others called it Lapsit Exilis, believing that it was a fallen gemstone on the crown of Lucifer. He decided that before leaving again, he would build a temple around it, never sure if it was out of his own sense of pride or his gratitude to Lucifer.

Then came the Shattering and the end of the Grand Experiment. The joy Anael had found teaching mankind didn’t last. It wasn’t long after that the war ended. After 40 days and 40 nights besieged in Genhinnom, Anael found himself bound in chains of fire as well. Then came Hell. The Abyss was even worse than he expected. Whatever authority he’d held before, during the war and before the fall, the Abyss was chaos. Anael found himself among the Cryptics, seeking any meaning that could be found in their desolate prison. Anael found himself counting, every demon he met, every breath, every spark that he could salvage of his previous self, just to remind himself that he was real. Eventually, he lost count. It was then that the first demons vanished, and not long after, Anael was summoned as well.

Anael was first summoned to the Sumerians through the stone he had once created for man, in service to Sargon the Great, under his direction teaching the Sumerians writing. It was in the service of Sargon the Great that Anael helped conquer the kingdom of Kazala, led by the human kind Kashtubila. It was said later of Kazala, “the birds could not find a place to perch away from the ground“. After Sargon the Great died, Anael served his second son Manishtushu who won a battle against 32 kings who rose in rebellion against him under Anael’s direction. But it was under Naram-Sin, the son of Manishtushu, that the pride of man overcame his usefulness to them. Naram-Sin, after conquering the nearby Lalubi, declared himself a god and Anael sank back into the Abyss.

But that was not the only time he was summoned. Using the same ancient Elah Gabal temple altar that he had created in the beginning, a roman oracle named Athanasia Glykera summoned him once more, enslaving him to learn oracles of the future. Despite the fact that Anael was enslaved, every moment of his freedom was remembered fondly and he was summoned several times in quick succession. Nevertheless, humans would grow old and die, and that was the fate of dear Athanasia as well. And then Anael was stranded in the Abyss once again.

After the Exodus, Anael’s first visit was to Sumeria, which he found was nearly erased, only ruins remaining. He went to Rome, and found a bastion of Christianity, an entire city filled with holy power which he could not cross, much less find the grave of Athanasia. It was then that Anael found himself being pulled, inevitably, back toward the Abyss. He flung himself away, trying to outrun the pull, if nothing else, before he found a body suitable for his use.

Born and raised in Oregon, Thomas Baker didn’t ever have many friends, instead pouring his attentions into learning. He went through for a Masters in Cultural Anthropology from Georgia State University before getting his Doctorate in Paleo Ontology, the ancient metaphysics of self; studying the ancient cultures humanities and archeology to determine philosophy of the nature of self. He began teaching at the University of North Florida. After several years of teaching, he became involved with a research project involving ancient civics structures, he began working with the Gaia Research Company. But after a short while, discovered the company’s connection with Endron International, a scandal that could’ve caused significant problems. But when he began to dig into it, he was forced to resign. After that, he moved back to Atlanta in hopes of getting a job at GSU, but they wouldn’t take him either. He continued to investigate Endron International until stumbling across a conflict between a group of Garou (Glasswalkers) and Pentex’ First Team, where he was killed in the crossfire. When the dust settled, Anael rose in his body.

In recent years, they.. he.. the combination of both of them, Thomas learned of the Council of Starke. Reminded of ancient Sumeria, and the system they had lived under, Thomas chose to move there, finding and buying a small two story with his remaining money, converting the ground floor into a used bookstore, with his apartment above. It was in this bookstore that Thomas met Anna Rhausta, the student who would become his first pact in this new world, an offer of educational aid in exchange for her faith in him.
