Barney was an apprentice in the ferrier craft when Randall was in his accident.  He wasn't Randall's apprentice but he was interested in the occult as well.  Telluriel found him and the two have had a working relationship since then.  He also has a pact with Barney, who he calls 'Barn' as he's just a teenager.  Telluriel protects Barney from his abusive father, and in return gets faith.
